Overview of Adhesive Tapes

Due to their versatility and ease of use self-adhesive tapes—also known as sticky tapes or pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) tapes, find application across a wide variety of industries.  Self-adhesive tapes are designed to stick to themselves as well as a substrate. These pressure sensitive adhesive tapes are well-suited for sealing, bonding & protection without the need for heat or other factors to activate the adhesive.

Pressure sensitive tapes can be customized to suit the unique needs of specialized applications, making them suitable for a broad range of bonding purposes.

Types of Adhesive Tapes

There are multiple varieties of adhesive tape, each with its own ideal set of use cases. Common classifications of adhesive tapes include:

  • Pressure-sensitive tape (self-adhesive tape, sticky tape)
  • Heat-activated tape
  • Water-activated tape (gummed tape, gummed paper tape)
  • UV-curable adhesives

Common Backings/Carriers

There are numerous backings and carriers to select from based on application, need, budget, and other factors. Some of the most common carriers and backings for adhesive tapes are:

  • Paper
  • Cloth
  • Felt
  • Foam
  • Metal foil
  • Plastic film/polymer
  • PET/polyester
  • PVC/vinyl
  • Rubber
  • Silicone
  • Acrylic films
  • Glass/fiberglass
  • Filament
  • Fluoropolymer/PTFE/PVDF
  • Transfer tape
  • Double-sided tape liners

Benefits of Pressure Sensitive Tape

Pressure sensitive tape offers users a host of benefits regardless of industry or application. While there are often additional upsides to using pressure-sensitive tape dependent on project specifics, certain features can be taken advantage of in most settings. Some of these advantages include:

  • Cost-effectiveness.
  • Tack. Sticky tape features an initial high tack. This makes it a preferable choice to acrylic options, which require time to cure before they perform to their full capabilities.
  • Versatility. Self-adhesive tape adheres to a variety of surfaces exceptionally well, including some materials which are notoriously tough to stick to.
  • Flexible bonding. Rubber-based adhesives are known for their ability to create highly flexible bonds. While not always beneficial, this feature is a key requirement in many applications.
  • Low temperatures. These adhesives are easily formulated to adhere despite frigid temperatures, which can be beneficial across cold storage, refrigeration, transportation, and outdoor applications
  • High temperature. Operating temperatures up to 600 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Durable. Epoxy resins, which are frequently utilized in sticky tapes, are well-known for their toughness and resistance to environmental and chemical damages. This translates to a product that’s rugged and reliable.
